Following the breakout success of the Five Nights at Freddy’s horror movie based on the video game, Blumhouse has announced that it’s making a sequel. This news was confirmed during CinemaCon in Las Vegas this week by the film giant Universal.

The sequel announcement is no big surprise. After all, the first movie broke box office records and became Blumhouse’s highest-grossing movie of all time. It earned more than $291 million globally.

The FNAF movie, which was directed by Emma Tammi, achieved these incredible box office numbers despite releasing day-and-date on Peacock. The movie stars Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) and Matthew Lillard (Scooby-Doo). Jim Henson’s Creature Shop worked the spooky animatronics.

It’s still early days for the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie sequel, so there is no word yet on if the director and original cast will return, nor do we know if series creator Scott Cawthon is involved.

The film was in the works for a long time, and even had big-name director Christopher Columbus (Harry Potter, Home Alone) attached to direct at one point. Series creator Scott Cawthon was highly protective of the story and script, which lengthened the development process. In the end, the FNAF movie became a commercial and a critical success.

Cawthon attended screenings of the movie and sat amongst fans. He remarked that the FNAF movie succeeded beyond his wildest dreams.
